The Sledding Chickens On Video!. . .

I had fun taking pictures of the girls in my previous "Snow Day" post, but my mom, who is visiting with my sister in Texas right now told me that I should have video taped it.  She wanted to see.  So yesterday, I had the girls show everyone via video how their Henny Penny's like to go sledding.

Here's part one:

And this is part 2:

Now isn't that so much more fun than sitting in front of a gaming system or a T.V.?  My children just love to play outside.  They do like their new XBox Kinect that they got for Christmas, but they really like playing outside more.  And they get plenty of fresh clean air living in the country.  We also made home made Maple Sugar Snow Candy yesterday.  It was delicious!

You know what I hope that everyone will take away from my blog (where chickens are concerned)?  It's simple, Buff Orpingtons are an amazing breed of chicken.  They are so sweet and friendly.  They love children and people in general.  They are extremely patient and absolutely full of personality. They thrive on human contact and make it simply impossible not to love them! I have 2 hens molting (since January), yet my 3 girls consistently give us 14 eggs per week.  If you don't have any chickens but are planning to start the wonderful chicken experience this spring, then I highly recommend the amazing Buff Orpingtons.  If you already have chickens and don't have any Orpingtons, then you need to add them to your flock.  We are going to add 2 more to our happy little flock this spring.  I can't wait!

  4. Caleb wishes he lived in Michigan so he could experience snow with his cousins. I don't blame him although I had enough of it growing up. I am happy to watch it with my windows open sitting in jeans and a t-shirt. I hope another thing your readers get from your blog is that children need to be out of doors as many hours of the day as possible. They need to play and interact with others face to face. You can have all the toys and gadgets in the world and it cannot do for a child what God's creation can.

    1. We wish he could be closer as well. It's so hard to be so far. And you are right, God's playground is far more enriching than all the toys and gadgets!

  5. This is probably an odd question but how quiet are your girls? I am having to re-home my flock of five because they are so loud that my neighbors are now complaining. The only quiet one is my Rhode Island Red but since I'm re-homing the rest of the girls (to my photography teacher) it didn't seem fair to keep only her. I've really enjoyed raising my hens and they are all very sweet and have great personalities, they're just too loud for too much of the day. Now I'm trying to figure out if there is a breed of chicken that is really quiet enough for close neighbors.

  6. Mirth-
It's not and odd question. But in answer to it, my girls are so very quiet. They do "talk", throughout the day, but is more of a cooing and very soft bawk bawking than anything. Certainly when someone lays an egg, I do get a loud egg song but that's about it! Over all, my 3 Buff Orpington's are very quiet chickens. If I had close neighbors, I would not worry about my girls disturbing them in the least. I'm so sorry that you have to re-home yours. Give Buff Orpingtons a try. They are so sweet, great layers, and full of personality. They love people, are great with kids and are a heritage breed rather than a hybrid/production bird. See this post about why that is an important factor in choosing a backyard flock: http://ourcountrychronicles.blogspot.com/2011/08/little-bit-of-chicken-school.html

  7. Kelly- thank you for responding. I read the article and I'm going to do some more research. What little I've read so far, most people agree on their personality but at least one person out there claims they are her loudest chickens. I just wish I had more space so it wouldn't be an issue at all. Thanks again.

    1. Mirth-I think I remember reading that before too. It may have been on Backyard Chickens that I saw it. I can tell you that Buff Orpington personalities are so laid back that it would stand to reason that they'd be a quiet bird. I think that one poster was most likely the exception, not the rule. Good luck with your research though!!

  8. Mirth, sorry you are losing your girls. I have a tiny garden with neighbours on 3 sides. Although my girls can squawk a bit when they want out, they are a lot quieter than the neighbourhood dogs. Strangely its my Rhode island red that is the noisiest. :0)

    1. You know Gordon, I live in the country so noise wouldn't be an issue for me if my girls were noisy (which they're not), but if I still lived in the city (which is where I lived up until about 15 years ago), I'd love the sound of chickens far better than the sound of barking dogs!!!

    2. Great minds think alike! I used to pull my chickens around on a sled in the winter as well... it was indeed much funner then TV! Cute video, and I agree.... BUFF ORPINGTONS ARE THE BEST! I currently have 2 right now. :)
